Weddings and the preparation for the big day are usually very memorable both for how busy this time can be but also for the not insignificant levels of stress involved in getting everything just right! The expectation is that this is a once in a lifetime event all about you and your partner and a big part of this is the photography. You will want (or expect to want…) these photographs as memorabilia forever, and as such, looking good on the day goes hand in hand.

So the concept of a “wedding transformation” is an understandable desire for many - what better motivation will there be than to look in the shape of your life for such a significant event. In over a decade of training clients, I have very often prepared both men and women for the big day and here are my key points to consider:

Be Realistic

Yeah yeah “balance” and all that…. we are here for dramatic transformations and admirable, worthwhile sacrifice right? Well yes, and the the steadfast, disciplined side of me would probably also be rolling my eyes and moving on to point 2 like you are strongly considering doing…but don’t!…just for a second. Even the ‘rapid’ transformations need a reasonable timescale and being massively calorie deprived will likely dampen both your results and your enjoyment of the wedding preparation process. Sleep, reasonable recovery, decent nutrition, and a sensible timescale will be vital elements to getting the most out of this challenge!

Meet Some Heavy Resistance

It won’t shock you that fat loss is often front and centre of wedding transformations and fair enough! While cardio alone will burn calories and drop bodyweight, most people want more than that. How often I have heard “I want my back and shoulders to look great in my sleeveless wedding dress” or “I want an impressive chest-waist ratio to show in my fitted suit” (yes I know I am paraphrasing) - great and appropriate vanity for such an event. But none of this comes from treadmill work. Cardio work alone has a tendency to result in a somewhat ‘flat’ look which most of us aren’t aspiring to. Even if you do want to be as small and skinny as possible - it is your day and your rules after all! - remember muscle tissue burns more calories at rest anyway. Hence, all wedding transformations will benefit from significant weight training.

Get The Food Right

You don’t need me to tell you that this is important. As earlier stated, don’t let this ruin your whole enjoyment of the process. Reasonable timescale, sensible calorie deficits, with high protein, and minimal alcohol is often (but not always) the prescribed combination. I’m never a fan of zero carbs - but some of you will do it anyway! If you must, it is vital to replace that missing energy source with natural healthy fats found in foods such as nuts, salmon, avocado and dairy - you need energy to workout effectively and get the desired results!

Complete The Look!

Having got the hard part right, the last thing you want is to undersell your look in the wrong choice of garment. If you are training with me in Islington, I cannot recommend highly enough the professional and charismatic Charlie Allen who has fitted many-a-wedding suit for my clients (mine included) and knows how to get it right! The talented Amy Faith is a great photographer for the big day and very flexible in snapping both conventional and less conventional marital celebrations!

Have fun and trust the process!
